Sensei Wu has left his Impossible Problems for all to see as a list pinned to the main hall board. There are two dozens of them, each more puzzling than the last. How to craft a bō without wood? How to strike beyond the range of your weapon? How to defeat someone whose martial skills are greater than yours on equal weaponry? How to break an unbreakable armor with a very breakable stick? Etc, etc.
And then, he went into hiding to avoid answering any further question. Thankfully, his students are there to fill in for him, and the other monks are likewise doing all they can to support the guests as they navigate through this foxing exercise.
Mechanical considerations
Unchanged from the previous day
This event does not take place in a particular timeslot and does not happen in a single location.
The whole event is treated as a single Downtime Scene.
As the start of the event, set your strife and fatigue to zero, and your Void points to your Void ring.
During this event, opportunities may only be used for fluff, for the extra options offered in some rolls, and in the following ways:
+: Remove 1 strife you gained from this check per spent this way.
+: You notice some details unrelated to the task at hand but quite relevant to the big picture. Gain 1 Information point per spent this way.
School abilities, techniques, advantages and disadvantages, only apply if listed here or explicitly stated to apply in this very thread. All their normal restrictions (once per scene, etc.) and costs (spend a Void point, etc.) must also be satisfied.
You can do a number of actions up to your Focus, to be picked among the list below.
Slightly different
You may unmask once at any point during this event, at the cost of losing 2 Impression points (Impression score can be negative), to either (choose one) reset your strife to zero, or increase your Focus by 1 until the end of the event (effectively granting you one additional action).
All actions can be repeated unless specified otherwise.
Rewards
For each 3 Information points earned through the event, you gain an additional Information Tidbit. Roll as many d20 as Tidbits earned that way to determine which ones.
If you match any of the following conditions at the end of the event, you gain the associated bonus.
Getting to know you: If you interacted twice or more with the same character (successfully or not), you gain one additional Information Tidbit about them. Roll 1d3 to know which one. Sensei Wu and totally not Sensei Wu count as two distinct characters for that purpose. This bonus can be acquired several times, targetting distinct NPCs.
Cross-reference your sources: If you interacted with 3 or more different characters (successfully or not), you gain 1 Impression point. If you interacted with 5 or more different characters, gain yet another 1 additional Impression point (for a total of +2). Sensei Wu and totally not Sensei Wu count as two distinct characters for that purpose.
Knowing one's limit: If you aren't Compromised and did not unmask this event, gain 1 Impression point.
Special
Mental
Curiosity triggers the first time this event you fail a check that would award Impression points if successful.
Social
Haruhi's demonstration, Hiro's explanation, Sennin's orderliness, Mother Tokiko's respite, Sensei Wu's other game, are all treated as social interactions targeting characters.
Speaking in Silence (Doji Diplomat School Ability), Heart of the Lion (Ikoma Bard School Ability), can be applied to them.
So do Artisan's Appraisal, Ancestry Unearthed, Weight of Duty, Truth Burns through Lies, Shallow Waters, at the additional condition that the ring of the check must match the element of the shūji (but ignoring restrictions on skills).
Heart of the Lion allows to either increase the TN of the related check by 1 to heal 2 strife, or take 2 strife to reduce the TN by 1. All usual restrictions (namely: once per scene) apply.
Artisan's Appraisal, Ancestry Unearthed, Weight of Duty, Truth Burns through Lies, Shallow Waters, all offer the following generic option instead of their by-the-book rules:
: You discover additional information in a way appropriate for the shūji. Gain one Information Tidbit, rolling 1d3 to determine which one. A maximum of one Tidbit per character per shūji can be obtained this way.
Spiritual
If you have access to the Fukurokujin's Wit Invocation, you may cast it without spending an action at the start of the event. Opportunities on that specific roll can only be assigned to negating strife.
If you succeed, you get the benefit of the invocation (i.e. +1 opportunity and +1 strife) for a number of actions equal to 1 plus your bonus successes.
If you know the Divination Ritual, you may likewise perform it at the very start of the event without spending an action. Opportunities on that specific roll can only be assigned to negating strife.
Fortune-Telling applies.
If you succeed, you get, as written, the bonus of the omen of your choice that can only be spent on a check this event.
If you fail, you get a random (please roll 1d4 instead of poking the GM) other omen instead.

Haruhi doesn't have the words to answer Sensei Wu's questions. But she's got the moves, ingrained into her through dutiful training. Moves that she'll happily demonstrate at length for people of the same mind to study. Sometimes, she'll even do so on the spot, interrupting her chores to execute a kata with her mop before the curious.

A tired but still valiant Sennin will welcome everyone in the monastery's small and eclectic library, with a word of encouragement for all, and acute advice about which texts to look out for pointers about the questions Sensei Wu has asked.
A precious help, as answers are split over a great variety of works and subjects: A digression in a medical article about pressure points, a legend about a bō master in a book of tales, a practical application of a half-forgotten philosophy in an obscure treaty, and so on. The wider the scholarly culture of the character, the more likely they are to connect the dots.

In such a small community, the abbess often does her fair share of helping out directly, and today is no exception.
Her audience chamber has been converted into a study room where calm and silence are mandatory. Characters can come here to think back without distractions about what they know or just learned about the hijinks of bōjutsu, and compose their answers in peace. Tea and writing furniture are quietly provided by the abbess herself sneakily going in and out of the room.

✽ Sensei Wu's game
The sensei is technically available to help... If you manage to find him.
The monk has sneaked out immediately at the end of the dawn meal, and has since been sighted in numerous places. Playing go in the village. Going for a stroll in the mountain. Mediating by the shrine. However, in most cases, by the time the prospective student had rushed there, the sensei has already departed, sometimes leaving behind him a paper crane with a hint of where he'll be next.
The old man is clearly enjoying this little hide-and-seek game very much.
Choose two distinct skills among the following: Fitness, Sentiment, Skulduggery, Survival, Tactics
Then roll for both skills against TN2, using two distinct rings of your choice.
If you succeed both checks, you catch the sensei. Gain 2 Impression points, as well as 1 point per two bonus successes accumulated over the two rolls. Also, for any subsequent attempts at this action, you may not use any of the skills or rings with which you just succeeded (there is however no TN increase).
Kitsuki's Method (Kitsuki Investigator School Ability), Born in the Saddle (Shinjo Outrider School Ability), Expert Tracker, apply to both checks.

In parallel to the sensei showing up and down, a mysterious character has also been sighted here and there in the vicinity. The strange individual shares Sensei's Wu silhouette, gait and voice, but is wearing a basket-like mask over his head, and they are playing the flute, so it's totally not him.
They can easily be approached and talked to, and are revealed to be quite chatty in the latter case, assailing their conversation partner with a flood of puns, jokes, tongue-in-cheek, and impromptu musical pieces. They even spice the conversation with a few veiled references to one's personal past, suggesting they're either very good at cold reading, have heard a few things about the guests from their good friends in the world, or both.
Among that flow are hidden surprisingly useful information for whoever is able to decode them.

All disadvantages with Interpersonal as their sole Type (Bitter Betrothal, Blackmailed by, etc.) apply.

Taka thinks that the man might have even been a mix of flustered and impressed.

The lack of studiousness is not lost on Sennin, but the politeness means that Taka is permitted. He glances through dozen of books, and actually gets a few ideas about battle records. He doesn't have the time and patience to dig into them at the moment, but it looks like something that could be really useful at some other point.

With the first series of challenges issued to the candidates, I decided to start by tracking down the source of the challenge, the Sensei himself. While the sensei does seem to revel in evasion and being cryptic, I would be a discredit as an investigator if I couldn't track down one man and glean information out of him. And I am not a discredit...
....
Having spoken at length with the Sensei, I decided to track down one of his current pupil's. Sister Haruhi was willing to demonstrate a bit more of what she demonstrated yesterday. I don't believe my discussion with Soshi-san during yesterday's demonstration prejudiced her against me, but I gained no further insight into her personally. As shown by my cousin's questioning, she can be difficult to get to know. Then again, interacting with monks is a different sort of challenging.

After the demonstration I took to Mother Tokiko's audience chamber for a moment of respite. I took the time to compose a letter to my magistrate reporting on my initial discoveries. Mother Tokiko seemed pleased with the effort, though her demeanor kept any conversation with her very polite and short.
....
Finally, I went to the library to find any more answers I could locate. While the librarian was quite occupied with the efforts of other candidates, my eyes were immediately drawn to a rather plain looking book on the shelf. It's contents were quite illuminating. While I didn't get to converse with the librarian, he did seem at least somewhat pleased that I hadn't been overly disruptive.

Reading the lists, Naoko's eyes crinkled with hidden laughter, though she did her best not to smile, to be a properly serious student as everyone drifted off to the corners of the monastery.
She didn't want to begin with the monks' quietly philosophical conversations about the questions, she wanted to go directly to the questioner, and knew she'd hardly be the only one. Tracking him was simple. A master of the staff he might be, but he was obviously still a student when it came to forestry. Nobody could be good at everything.
And he was fast and crafty, she'd give him that. Once he knew she was on his trail, she needed to anticipate some shortcuts to already be behind the boulder he ducked behind to hide. "Hi there!" she offered with a broad grin." She didn't like the tenor of some of the conversation as she steered into supernatural possibilities for solving a few of the puzzles. Nothing she could quite put a finger on, left her feeling a bit shaken, and with the sense that perhaps her secrets weren't so secret. Sensei Wu was the one grinning when the Soshi broke off and declared she ought to get back to the monastery before everyone'd already claimed the best scrolls in the library for their own studies.
Which did take her to the library, her mood much improved by the trot back through the forest. Sennin's realm, it seemed, as she strolled through and poked into corners, until he was there with a librarian's 'can I help you?' with an implied 'please stop pulling out scrolls and putting them back onto random shelves.' And while she'd hoped that a few, "so everyone says that..." statements with laughably incorrect beliefs would draw out some enlightening answers, it honestly just seemed to frustrate the poor fellow. She learned a bit on the side, certainly, but found herself frustrated as well and heading to the sort of sanctuary the abbess had prepared.
Honestly, she was curious to see a bit more of the woman, given hints and whispers elsewhere. She didn't find a meditative state _at all_. But sitting with your eyes closed let one focus more on listening...at least for as long as she could stand sitting still like that. It wasn't long before Naoko shook her head and left to just go question the flames directly to see what they could tell her.
Armed with these bits and pieces, she went searching for the Sensei again with more pointed questions, trying to put herself into his mindset and determining where he'd go--which honestly just reminded her of those questions again, and soon she could feel the tufts of her ears press against the wooden mask, the prickle of claws. Instinctively, she slipped along the shadowy spaces of the giant cavern with some mischief in mind.

Initially, thinking himself clever, Shosuro Keiharu attempted to observe the other attendees and capitalize on their efforts to locate the elusive Sensei Wu.
It was a wild failure, with the young shugenja never coming close to the revered sensei.
Well, sort of never. Since finding "not Sensei Wu" was quite straightforward. Although what Keiharu came away from the interaction with was not so much an impression made on "not Sensei Wu" as a list of leads to pursue in the community that was growing around him. Which was perhaps what the sneaky Scorpion had really wanted anyway.
In the end, unwilling to let the opportunity pass, Keiharu went hunting for Sensei Wu himself and successfully found the wily monk. The young Scorpion managed to keep up with the older but quite nimble man as he continued to move about, earning a bit of recognition in the community as well as a touch of pride in himself for overcoming earlier frustration and finding success.

The Imperial with the wide brimmed hat and flute encountered the mysterious man with a basket and a flute. Naturally, they had to share a tune. Hibiki found it difficult, and confusing, to follow the man's song, but she persevered. While breathless in the end, she felt she left an impression.
In the library, the Seppun focused on whatever medical information she could find. Perhaps there was something pertaining to her personal needs. Sennin's guidance, however, kept that distraction from misleading her.
Hibiki found Hiro in the garden, interested in speaking with him again. The conversation was not quite what she expected, but it wasn't that different from their previous discussion. There was so much he wanted to say, more than needed to be said. She understood that compulsion, however, and listened patiently.
Today, Hibiki chose to commune with the spirits of the mountain air. She listened with interests to the whispers on the wind.

Riri had not even been there when Sensei Wu first said his questions - chasing that fox had taken a long time, after all. But when she saw them, she knew how to start approaching them.
Some people were studying, or trying to compose answers in writing. She looked at those in the library and shuddered a bit. She might have to do it as well. She probably would have to.
But first...
She went to the practice area to find Haruhi there demonstrating some more moves. That was definitely the way to start looking for answers - doing, not thinking.
Or well, maybe thinking while doing?
It took some effort, and she wasn't sure if that would count as answers, but she at least thought she had learnt something after a rather long time practicing with the young nun. Hopefully about what Sensei Wu expected of them... but if not, at least about Haruhi herself!
Later in the day she found Hiro in the rock garden, apparently open to answering questions. That much she had learnt in Shizuka Toshi - you can learn many things by talking to others that you'd have a hard time learning in books.
What she didn't expect was how frustratingly cryptical his answers were. Or how slowly he spoke. Or how excited he seemed to be about walking at a snail's pace about the rock garden while doing it!
He did seem nice, though.... and after some "Aha!" moments she thought she had managed to understand some things. But HOTEI'S BELLY was that a frustrating process. She thanked Hiro politely at the end, and tried to do it with a friendly smile - something she'd heard today when the young monk had stopped by as she was training with Haruhi had made her rather curious about him. But to an attentive observer, her relief when she left the rock garden was quite obvious!
As the day drew to a close, she happened upon that an man playing melodies on a Shakuhachi, a basket covering his head. She was almost sure she'd heard him in the monastery...
... she was almost sure she had seen and heard him somewhere. But more importantly - his remarks and jokes were apparently a game of some sort! Sadane? Although the way he moved around... was it a dance of some sort?
She tried to pay attention to his words and movements at the same time, and while the series of witty remarks was met with some offhanded comments that made him laugh, in the end it made for more of an interesting conversation - including some "a little bird told me" moments about the people in the Monastery - than an enlightening one.
Although when she made her way back to the common room, she had some more "Aha" moments as she put together some things the old man had said, Hiro's comments and Haruhi's lessons.
Hm... Interesting!
